1950–1957: the 250F era
Officine Alfieri Maserati
The 250F era; Fangio's fifth title in 1957.
Maserati contested the championship from 1950, but the definitive car was the 250F of 1954 — beautiful, forgiving and available to customers. Fangio won on its debut in Argentina.
Fangio returned to the works team in 1957 and won his fifth title, including the Nürburgring drive that is still routinely called the greatest in the sport's history. Financial trouble at the parent company and the Guidizzolo Mille Miglia disaster ended the works effort that year.

Customer 250Fs run by independents after the works exit.
With the factory withdrawn, privateers continued to enter 250Fs and later Maserati-engined specials for three more seasons, a reminder of how much of a 1950s grid was made up of customer machinery.
The name later returned only as an engine badge, most notably powering Cooper in 1966–1969.
