2002–2009: Cologne's expensive lesson

Thirteen podiums, no wins, then withdrawal.
Toyota built a vast facility at Cologne and entered in 2002 with a reported annual budget larger than any rival's. Mika Salo scored a point in the very first race and then almost nothing followed for two years.
2005 was the high point: Jarno Trulli was second in Malaysia and Bahrain, Ralf Schumacher took pole in Japan, and Toyota finished fourth in the constructors' championship. Timo Glock and Trulli produced further podiums in 2009.
Toyota withdrew in November 2009 after the financial crisis, having spent an estimated several billion dollars without winning a Grand Prix. It returned as a technical partner to Haas in 2024.
