1964–1968: the first works entry
Honda R&D
Own chassis and engines; wins in Mexico 1965 and Italy 1967.
Honda entered Formula One in 1964 with a transverse V12 of its own design, less than a decade after the company had started making cars at all. Richie Ginther won the last race of the 1.5-litre formula, the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix.
John Surtees joined for 1967 and won at Monza in the hastily built RA300, the 'Hondola', assembled around a Lola chassis in six weeks.
Jo Schlesser was killed at Rouen in 1968 in an air-cooled RA302 that Surtees had refused to race. Honda withdrew at the end of the season and did not return as a constructor until it bought BAR in 2006.
