Brabham spans three distinct managements — Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac, Bernie Ecclestone, and a series of late owners — under one continuous name, and it produced some of the boldest engineering in the sport's history.
Jack Brabham left Cooper to build cars with Ron Tauranac. In 1966 he won the drivers' championship in his own Repco-powered car, a feat nobody has repeated; Denny Hulme won in 1967 and the team took consecutive constructors' titles.
Bernie Ecclestone bought the team in 1971 and, with designer Gordon Murray, made it a technical laboratory: the BT46B 'fan car' won its only race at Anderstorp in 1978 before being withdrawn, and the BT52 took Nelson Piquet's 1983 title with BMW turbo power — the first turbocharged drivers' championship.
Ecclestone sold in 1988 as his commercial role in the sport grew. A succession of underfunded owners followed; the team failed to qualify repeatedly and collapsed mid-1992.
