He took Cooper's rear-engined cars to consecutive titles in 1959 and 1960, pushing the car over the line at Sebring to win his first.
He left to build his own cars with Ron Tauranac in 1962.
The Repco-powered BT19 delivered the 1966 title; team-mate Denny Hulme took the 1967 crown.
He retired after 1970, having also engineered much of the British constructor boom.
