1973–1980: black cars, one win, one walkout
Shadow Racing Cars
One win, Austria 1977; the team Arrows split from.
Don Nichols brought his Can-Am team to Formula One in 1973 with black-liveried Cosworth-powered cars. Peter Revson was killed testing at Kyalami in 1974, and Tom Pryce — the team's fastest driver — died at the same circuit in 1977 after striking a marshal crossing the track.
Weeks after Pryce's death, Alan Jones won the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix for Shadow in a chaotic wet-dry race. That winter, most of the senior staff left to form Arrows, taking design work with them.
Shadow won the resulting copyright case but never recovered competitively. Teddy Yip took over in 1980 and the team folded at the end of that season.
