The Enstone factory has produced championship-winning cars under two different names for two different world champions, and has been sold or rebranded five times. Confusingly, it has raced as Renault twice and as Lotus once, while a different team also called Lotus raced elsewhere.
BWT Alpine F1 Team
Renault's sports-car brand takes the entry; Ocon wins Hungary 2021.
Enstone became Alpine for 2021, with Alonso returning to the team where he won his titles and Esteban Ocon winning the Hungarian Grand Prix that year. Pierre Gasly joined in 2023.
Management churn has been constant, and from 2026 the team runs customer Mercedes power units after Renault closed its Viry-Châtillon F1 engine programme.
Toleman
Turbo-era outsiders. Senna's debut season.
Ted Toleman's haulage business funded a Formula Two graduate team that entered Formula One in 1981 with Hart turbo engines and Pirelli tyres. Qualifying was a struggle in the first year.
Ayrton Senna drove the TG184 in 1984, finishing second at a rain-shortened Monaco in only his sixth Grand Prix. A tyre-supply dispute cost the team a race in 1985, and Benetton — already the team's sponsor — bought it at the end of the year.
Benetton Formula
27 wins, two drivers' titles and the 1995 constructors' championship.
The Benetton family bought Toleman and rebranded for 1986, moving to Witney and then Enstone. Gerhard Berger won at Mexico in 1986 and the team became a consistent front-runner.
Michael Schumacher arrived from Jordan in 1991 and won drivers' titles in 1994 and 1995, plus the constructors' championship in 1995 with Ford and then Renault power. After Schumacher left for Ferrari, the team slid, and Renault bought it in 2000.
Renault F1 Team
20 wins and back-to-back doubles with Alonso in 2005 and 2006.
Renault bought Enstone back in December 2015 to run a works team once again. Investment rebuilt the site, and Daniel Ricciardo joined for 2019, but the team never got beyond the midfield.
Renault decided the Renault name added little in Formula One marketing terms and turned to its sports-car sub-brand instead.
Lotus F1 Team
Genii Capital ownership; Raikkonen wins Abu Dhabi 2012.
Genii Capital licensed the Lotus name, giving the Enstone team its fourth identity. Kimi Räikkönen returned from rallying and won in Abu Dhabi in 2012 and Melbourne in 2013, with Romain Grosjean scoring regularly.
The Mercedes-powered 2015 car was better than the funding behind it; unpaid bills and winding-up petitions made a sale unavoidable.
