The Long Version

A Borders farmer, he joined Colin Chapman's Lotus in 1960 and never drove for another Formula One team.

Titles came in 1963 and 1965, the latter alongside victory at the Indianapolis 500.

His seven wins from ten races in 1963 remains one of the highest win rates in a season.

He died at Hockenheim in April 1968; his death shook a generation of drivers into demanding safer circuits.
