Raw wins reward long careers
Modern calendars run 22 to 24 races. Fangio''s five championships came from seasons of seven or eight. Comparing win totals across those eras without adjusting for opportunity is meaningless.
Win and podium rate
Wins divided by starts is the fairest single number. It rewards drivers who converted the chances they had, and it exposes drivers whose totals came from sheer longevity.
Machinery matters
No driver has won a title in an uncompetitive car. Any honest ranking has to weigh how good the constructor was in the same season — which is why the archive links every driver record to the team''s record for those years.
