The Long Version

He arrived in Europe as a road-racing champion in his late thirties and finished runner-up in the first championship season.

Titles followed with Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.

His 1957 win at the Nürburgring, retaking 48 seconds after a botched pit stop, is regarded as the greatest single drive.

He retired mid-1958 having won 24 of 51 starts.
