A one-off Jordan drive at Spa in 1991 ended after one corner; Benetton had signed him by the next race.
Two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995 came amid controversy at Adelaide and a season scarred by Imola.
He joined a struggling Ferrari in 1996 and, with Todt, Brawn and Byrne, built the run of five straight titles from 2000.
A three-season comeback with Mercedes from 2010 produced one podium and helped establish the team that would dominate the decade.
