The son of Grand Prix driver Antonio Ascari, he joined Ferrari in 1950.
He won every race he entered across 1952 and the start of 1953 — nine straight championship victories.
He plunged into Monaco harbour in 1955 and survived, only to die testing a sports car at Monza four days later.
